SUSTAINABLE - VALUABLE - BEAUTIFUL
Founded in 1997, Tilson Group is a national award winning landscape construction firm specializing in installing green roof systems. Tilson has been installing green roofs since 2009 and has installed over 800,000 square feet of green roofs (or approximately 18 acres). Green Roofs help sustain our environment, add value to our built surroundings and create beauty for all to enjoy.
Tilson Group has installed over 18 acres of green roofs in the Mid-Atlantic region and with many types of systems. Our expertise in product knowledge, logistics, and thorough project management oversight during the entire installation process is the reason why so many clients have used our services multiple times. We use a collaborative approach to our process which enables development and construction companies understand the green roof installation process and assist them with integrating our approach to their construct schedules. Proper maintenance is crucial to the long term success of a green roof. Tilson Group’s team specializes in providing preventative maintenance with proper horticultural care and nurturing of your green roof to protect your investment and enjoy its aesthetic benefits. Our team has an acute understanding of the ecological aspects of a green roof. We closely monitor soil biology, natural succession of plant material and overall plant health. Each of these components are critical in a maintaining a successful green roof. Our team will be responsive in providing prompt and thorough reports during the maintenance period to insure your green roof is getting the best care.
GREEN ROOF BENEFITS
Green roofs create a significant value to the built environment by offering a multitude of benefits in several areas. Below are a few of these benefits.
Storm Water Management – Green Roofs reduce the amount of storm water runoff by storing rain water in the soil media, drainage system and ultimately the plants themselves. The retained rainwater is then returned naturally to the atmosphere through transpiration and evaporation. This reduces the amount of runoff to our storm/sewer systems and improves water quality in our streams, rivers and tributaries.
Reduces Urban Heat Island Effect – Through the daily transpiration and evaporation cycle, green roof systems are able to cool rooftops during hot summer months and reduce the Urban Heat Island effect. The light absorbed by the vegetation on the green roofs would otherwise be converted into heat energy that would otherwise be released back into the atmosphere. Black rooftops are one of the leading causes in increased Heat Island Effect for urban areas.
Improves Air Quality – Green Roof plants capture airborne pollutants and filter noxious gases. This reduces the amount of greenhouse gas emissions released back into the atmosphere. The moderating effects of green roofs helps reduce the demand on our power supply and potential decrease the amount of Carbon Dioxide and other pollutants being released into the air. This improves are overall air quality.
Energy Efficiency – Green roofs offer an extra layer of insulation on rooftops thus reducing the amount of energy loss within our buildings. By adding a green roof to your building you would be helping moderate the temperature of your building and thus could be saving on heating and cooling costs.
